Bringing home new fish is exciting, but proper handling is essential for their health and safety. Fish are sensitive to sudden changes in temperature and water conditions, so a careful, gradual introduction helps them settle comfortably and reduces stress. Follow these simple steps to give your new fish the best start in their new home.
1. Inspect the Fish Pack
Before opening, check the fish bag for leaks, signs of disease, or stressed fish. Make sure the water is clear and the fish are active.
2. Float the Bag in the Tank
Take the fish pack and gently place it in your aquarium. Let it float for 15–20 minutes. This allows the temperature inside the bag to slowly match the tank’s water, preventing shock to the fish.
3. Gradually Introduce Tank Water
After the temperature has adjusted, open the bag carefully and slowly add small amounts of tank water into the bag every 5–10 minutes over a period of 20–30 minutes. This helps the fish acclimate to the water chemistry.
4. Release the Fish
Use a net to gently transfer the fish from the bag to the tank. Avoid pouring the bag water directly into the aquarium, as it may contain contaminants or excess food.
5. Observe the Fish
After release, watch the fish for signs of stress, such as gasping at the surface or hiding excessively. Give them time to adjust, and avoid feeding for the first 2–3 hours to reduce stress.
6. Maintain Clean Water
Check water parameters regularly and perform routine maintenance to keep your new fish healthy. Proper filtration, temperature, and pH levels are essential for their well-being.
